Capturing Your Essence in Iconic Locations

TL;DR – What You’ll Learn in This Post

  • How location becomes part of your brand identity, not just scenery
  • Why certain spaces amplify your visual storytelling
  • Behind-the-scenes from Elevated Realism™ shoots worldwide
  • My process for matching environments to entrepreneurs

Your Brand Lives in a Specific Universe

A personal brand isn’t just what you offer — it’s the world you create around your work.
That universe gets defined through imagery. Not only your presence, but the environments you inhabit. The textures that surround you. The quality of light you’re seen in.

Location transforms photography from documentation into atmosphere.

How the Right Space Shifts Everything

Something changes when you position yourself in an environment that reflects your trajectory.

“Environment doesn’t just frame you — it reveals you.”

From windswept Turkish landscapes to intimate Manhattan lofts to tropical modernist villas — each setting becomes part of your visual language.

This isn’t about opulence.
It’s about resonance.

Does the environment hold who you’re becoming?
Does it communicate what language can’t capture?

When it does, both the imagery and the brand transcend the ordinary.

The Reality: Your Best Locations Already Exist

Here’s what most people don’t expect: the most powerful locations are often the ones you already inhabit.

Your workspace.
Your neighborhood.
Your morning ritual spots.
The environments you’ve intentionally designed around your life.

“Spaces that already carry your energy photograph with authenticity.”

When I arrive in a client’s city, we typically work within their existing ecosystem — thoughtfully designed home offices, creative spaces, and restorative landscapes.

These aren’t random backdrops.
They’re extensions of identity.

Case Study: Lewis Howes in Turkey

Lewis Howes standing in flowing robes with Cappadocia landscape in the background
2019 – Lewis Howes – Turkey

Lewis and I created this series in Cappadocia. Floating balloons against the dawn sky. Timeless terrain.

We weren’t documenting — we were mythmaking.

His work centers on human potential, transformation, and life as education. So we selected a landscape that felt eternal. Expansive. Ancient.

“This transcended photography. It became ceremony.”

That’s the intention.
The right environment doesn’t just support your story — it amplifies it.

Case Study: Caoimhe Harrison in Ireland

Cuiva Harrison standing in front of a mystical castle in Ireland

Cuiva’s session required the wild edges of Ireland.

As a guide working with ancient feminine wisdom, her imagery needed depth and sovereignty. We chartered a helicopter to reach locations that held her essence.

The shoot included:

  • Medieval castle grounds
  • The raw power of the Cliffs of Moher
  • Dawn mist and natural movement

These weren’t posed portraits.
They were transmissions.

Each frame conveyed mysticism, embodiment, and authority.

My Location Selection Process

Every shoot begins with discovery questions:

  • What environments make you feel most yourself?
  • Which spaces represent your next chapter?
  • Where does your creativity naturally expand?

From there, the process unfolds:

  1. Analyzing your brand essence and visual direction
  2. Reviewing (and refining) your location ideas
  3. Sourcing additional options through creative location platforms
  4. Selecting based on light quality, design coherence, and narrative power

“Forget impressive. Find authentic.”

From Bali Temples to Brooklyn Lofts — Every Space Tells a Story

My work has taken me to:

  • Sacred spaces in Indonesian mountains
  • Minimalist galleries in South Beach
  • Desert compounds outside Joshua Tree
  • Glass penthouses above Manhattan
  • Coastal cliffs and ancient forests

Each environment shaped the visual frequency.

Your story doesn’t live in your bio.
It lives in the frame — the interplay of light, form, and atmosphere.

When selected with intention, environments attract the exact audience who resonates with your world.

Nick Onken portrait, three gaps in a personal brand

Every personal brand stalls in one of three gaps: Identity, Signal, or Infrastructure. Most people have the third and spend years fixing the first.

Creative coherence is when who you are and how you’re seen are the same thing. A short, clear definition of the term, its four layers, and why it makes a brand magnetic.

A magnetic through-line is the one or two word idea your whole brand becomes associated with. What it is, why it matters, and how to find yours.

About the Blogger

I was born in a low middle class conservative religious family in the suburbs of Seattle. Art was and always has been my passion, and more than that a way of life. Starting as a graphic designer, I taught myself photography, built a commercial/editorial business shooting for the worlds biggest brands like Nike, Coca-Cola, Adidas and more. I've also had the opportunity to photograph the world's biggest celebrities like Justin Bieber, Usher, Jessica Alba and more. I've curated a lifestyle around creativity and have learned a lot along the way which I get to share here.
