How to Spend a 6-hour Layover in Lisbon

How to turn a 6 hour layover into a city adventure.

Have you ever booked a trip, and the only way to get there was with a painful multi-hour layover?

Last week, after we booked tickets for the Pencils of Promise project, our best option for travel was a 6 hour mid-day layover in Lisbon. Rather than stay stuck in an airport, I wondered, how we can see the city and spend those six hours wisely?

In scouring Google results, I found a tour company right up our alley called We Hate Tourism Tours, which allowed us to create a DIY off the beaten path adventure. They picked us up from the airport, and gave us a well rounded and unique glimpse into the city, leaving us curious of seeing more.

Here were my favorite stops:

1) Montana Shop & Gallery Lisboa: a small shop of artisanal graffiti supplies for street artists. You can see from the picture in the gallery they have a really beautiful wall of spray paint cans that are color coded.

2) A Vida Portuguesa: a shop of vintage Portuguese brands, with trinkets like bars of soap, notebooks and other gifts with vintage packaging design.

3) We Hate Toursim Tours shop/office. (The last pics in the gallery above.) The tour company was started by a graphic designer so the brand is on point and they have a lot of fun trinkets to go along with it.

To create a mapped out itinerary of our tour, I teamed up with my friends over at Mosey. You can check that out here.

We interviewed the founder of Mosey, Matthew Loyd on Shoptalk Radio last week. Check it out here.

Have you been to Lisbon? What are your favorite underground shops and restaurants to visit?

A side-by-side comparison of a dull, flat brand photo next to an expressive, vibrant Elevated Realism™ image

Most First-Time Brand Shoots Miss the Mark — Here’s Why If you’re preparing for your first brand photoshoot, you’re likely focused on the obvious: outfits, lighting, maybe even the perfect smile. But what actually makes a photoshoot land is much deeper — and most people don’t know what to look for. And unfortunately, that’s why most first-time […]

Personal brand client standing in golden light, styled editorially, radiating presence and authenticity on camera

The Problem With Traditional Brand Photograph Most brand photos are surface-level. They might be polished. Perfectly lit. Technically solid. But they lack soul. They don’t make you feel the person. They don’t communicate energy, depth, or identity. They look good — but they don’t resonate. And that’s a problem if you’re a thought leader, coach, speaker, author, or […]

A mood board filled with textures, color palettes, typography samples, and brand imagery on a designer’s wall — representing the visual identity process

One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make is building their website, offers, or marketing before they’ve ever clarified their brand identity. They hire web designers before they’ve defined their vibe. They write sales pages without knowing the feeling their brand is meant to transmit. But everything — your website, your photos, your content, your brand world — should stem […]

A personal brand shoot isn’t about winging it with cute outfits […]

Entrepreneur preparing emotionally for a personal brand photoshoot with Nick Onken

Getting in front of a camera isn’t just about appearance—it’s about energy, mindset, and emotion. When you’re being photographed, especially for something as intimate and revealing as a personal brand shoot, the camera becomes a mirror. A mirror of confidence—or insecurity. Of ease—or resistance. Over the years, I’ve learned that the emotional preparation is just […]
