Jenna is a beautiful and powerful leader that I met through the leadership workshop I’ve been doing. She’s become a good friend and is up to some big things. She started as a personal trainer and has trained some big names. She has a powerful story and is taking that to the next level and life coaching people to the next level in their lives.Jenna recently wrote a guest blog post on how to overcome being overwhelmed.

In your work as a personal trainer, who have you worked with that you can talk about?

I’ve worked with a smorgasbord of amazing human beings. I had been a trainer for just a month when I was 23, and my first client was Ben Stiller. I trained him for one of his movies and that experience catapulted my career into a vortex of limitless possibilities almost overnight. I was sought after by Jeremy Piven, Jackie Warner, Mark Hoppus (blink 182), the Marciano family, Kate Mara, Donald Penn (NFL), Katy Perry, Michael Rappaport and 3 Saudi Arabian princesses. I’ve also been blessed to work with Harold Rosen. He’s an 88 year old bad ass and he also invented the satellite that allows you to be reading this on your smartphone right now. I know. #mindblown

What’s a monumental moment in your life that has shaped your outlook?

When I was 17, I was in a head trauma accident that changed everything for me. I woke up from a coma with brain damage and had to relearn how to read, write, and verbally communicate. While I was in the ICU the doctors simultaneously diagnosed me with type 1 diabetes. I also had to learn how to manage that while I was regaining my sense of self. Doctors said I’d never be the same and they couldn’t have been more right. I made a full recovery, against their prognosis, and I graduated from high school on time even though they said it wasn’t possible. I realized that I can create and overcome anything if I want it badly enough.

What’s your vision?

My accident was the best thing that ever happened for me. It gave me the gift of realizing my life’s purpose. I’m on a mission everyday to motivate and inspire as many people as possible to move their bodies, eat REAL food, love themselves, and be a contribution to the higher good by paying it forward. We hold the key to total wellness and a healed world in our hands. Can you imagine what this world would be like if everyone loved themselves? I know it’s possible, and it all starts with Self Love.

What’s your mission for I’m On A Mission?

In this collective universe, we’re all on some kind of a mission every single day and throughout our entire life. Everyone has a mission to complete and a purpose to fulfill. I’m On A Mission is a way of life and a mindset that is available to anyone. I’m building a team of like-minded ninjas all over the world who are also on a mission to kick ass in life and we’re known as #teamIAM. We rock my inspiring I•▲M apparel line, eat food that wasn’t made in a factory, love to raise the bar and sweat everyday, and motivate everyone around us to love who they are. For my next project, I’m filming a web series around the I’m On A Mission mindset – featuring incredible people who have overcome the impossible and/or turned their pain into purpose. I want this to reach, and change the lives of, millions of people. And so it will!

Hiking a New Zealand mountain trail, learning at your own pace in midlife

I spent a month training kung fu in Wudang at 47, the oldest and slowest learner in the room. What being a beginner again in midlife taught me about pace, comparison, and starting anyway.

Photographer walking a snow-capped mountain ridge in New Zealand, the long practice of seeing that develops taste

You develop taste through thousands of reps of looking closely and deciding what works. A photographer’s honest answer on how taste gets built.

Silhouetted figure leaping from a sea cliff at sunset, committing to one coherent personal brand identity

You make a personal brand more coherent by naming the identity underneath it, distilling a one or two word through-line, and bringing the four layers into agreement. The full path, in order.

Nick Onken travel image, Life Intelligence essay on travel as creative input that sharpens the eye

You cannot pour from an empty well. Travel is how I refill mine. Here is why new places are creative input rather than a break from the work, and why output without input runs dry.

Nick Onken portrait, Creative Intelligence essay on the creative act versus performing one

There is a difference between making something and performing the act of making it. Here is what I learned about the creative act, content, and why the resistance is the whole game.

Nick Onken portrait, illustrating that personal brand identity is human-built with AI as the tool on top

AI can generate endless brand content, but it cannot construct the identity underneath it. Here is the real line between what AI can do for your brand and what only you can.

Nick Onken portrait, Life Intelligence essay on nervous system regulation and creative recovery

Burnout is less a willpower problem than a nervous system running with no recovery. Here is what I learned about creative recovery from social media burnout and a reset in Costa Rica.

Elevated Realism brand portrait by Nick Onken, a subject looking unmistakably like themselves

Most brand photographers take good photos of you. Few capture who you actually are. Here is what to look for when hiring a brand photographer so your images match your authority.

Nick Onken portrait, Creative Intelligence essay on taste and the discipline of seeing

Taste is less a gift than a discipline you build through thousands of reps of seeing. Here is what twenty-five years behind a camera taught me about the art of seeing.

Nick Onken portrait illustrating visual frequency of authority, presence matching identity

Visual Frequency of Authority is the energetic signature your images transmit before anyone reads a word. What it means and why two people with the same credentials read so differently.

Nick Onken portrait, three gaps in a personal brand

Every personal brand stalls in one of three gaps: Identity, Signal, or Infrastructure. Most people have the third and spend years fixing the first.

Nick Onken portrait, Life Intelligence essay on martial arts as a daily practice

A month of kung fu training in Wudang, China taught me that the body learns at the speed of honesty rather than the speed of ambition. Here is what martial arts taught me about practice.

Nick Onken portrait illustrating creative coherence between identity and image

Creative coherence is when who you are and how you’re seen are the same thing. A short, clear definition of the term, its four layers, and why it makes a brand magnetic.

About the Blogger

I was born in a low middle class conservative religious family in the suburbs of Seattle. Art was and always has been my passion, and more than that a way of life. Starting as a graphic designer, I taught myself photography, built a commercial/editorial business shooting for the worlds biggest brands like Nike, Coca-Cola, Adidas and more. I've also had the opportunity to photograph the world's biggest celebrities like Justin Bieber, Usher, Jessica Alba and more. I've curated a lifestyle around creativity and have learned a lot along the way which I get to share here.
